Services announced by local churches

Special services and other activities in churches this week, include the following:

Abingdon Episcopal

Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, continues to collect non-perishable food items for the Bread for Life Food Pantry. All non-perishables may be brought to the parish hall during office hours (Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-noon).

Outdoor worship service will be held at 7:45 a.m. Sunday; weather permitting. Everyone is to bring bring their own chair, household groups or solo individuals be seated six feet apart, and to wear cloth face masks.

Like Abingdon Church on Facebook and subscribe to its YouTube channel to join live Sunday morning at 9 o’clock for an online worship service. To receive a bulletin of the order of service, email the church at admin@abingdonchurch.org.

Bellamy United Methodist

Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will offer in person worship at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Fellowship Hall. There is limited seating; contact the church office if you desire to attend or you may register by completing Health Screening form at www.evc.vaumc.org/open/worshipregistration/Page1.cfm. Masks will be required for all guests and safe practices will be adhered to throughout the morning including a health screening prior to the service. There are no childcare or nursery services available. The service will be posted to the church’s YouTube and Facebook pages in the afternoon and will continue to be available each Sunday. Bethany United Methodist

The sermon title of Pastor Mike Derflinger of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself.” Masks and social distancing are mandatory.

Bethel Baptist

Bethel Baptist Church, Gloucester, continues to hold its worship services online or conference call. The sermon title of Minister Dr. Katrina Brown at noon Sunday will be “The Art of Complaining.” The service can be accessed by logging onto https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/929136757 or also call 1-312-757-3121 and use access code, 929-136-757#. Sunday school will start at 10 a.m. using the same access information and Wednesday Bible study will begin at 7 p.m.

Bethel United Methodist

Bethel United Methodist Church, Onemo, will hold Bible study groups at 10:05 a.m. Sunday. Worship service will begin at 10:50. Everyone is required to wear a face covering and social distance. Central United Methodist

The sermon title of the Rev. John Choi, pastor of Central United Methodist Church, Mathews, at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday communion service will be “The Meaning of Spiritual Community.” Those attending are asked to wear face coverings, and social distancing is observed. A service will also be offered online at 9:15 a.m. and can be accessed through the church’s home page at www.centralumcmathews.org.

Church of Abraham

The sermon title of Pastor Sheron P. Green of Church of Abraham at 8:30 a.m. Sunday will be “The Choice is Yours.” The church is meeting at its new location, 4810 Hickory Fork Road, Gloucester. Communion will be observed. Social distancing will be practiced, masks required, and temperatures will be taken at the door.

Church of the Living Word

The sermon title of Lead Pastor Melvin Epps of Church of the Living Word, Hayes, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “Keep the Faith, Part 2.”

The Gospel of Matthew will be the topic for the 6 p.m. Wednesday Bible study via Zoom.

First Baptist

Gloucester Point Baptist

Pastor Bud Goude of Gloucester Point Baptist Church will begin a new series, “Talking with Jesus,” at 11 a.m. Sunday. The sermon title will be “The Women at the Well.” Face coverings will be required while in the church building.

Grace Covenant Presbyterian

The sermon title of Dr. Douglas Nagel of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, at the 10:30 a.m. in-person Sunday service will be “Gideon: How Did We Do That?”

Groves Memorial Presbyterian

The sermon title for the Rev. Michael Condrey of Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church, Glass, at the 10 a.m. Sunday communion service will be “You Are Farmland.”

Gwynn’s Island Baptist

Gwynn’s Island Baptist plans to host a drive-in service at 10 a.m. Sunday around the gazebo across from the church. Parking will begin at 9:30. The sermon topic of Dr. Ed Jordan, pastor, will be “Balancing the Future.” Special music will include a recorded piano/organ duet by Merle Guy and John Lee Callis.

Kingston Episcopal Parish

Kingston Episcopal Parish, Mathews, will gather for a outdoor service at 8 a.m. Sunday on the grounds of Christ Church Cemetery on Williams Wharf Road. In addition, online Sunday services will be held on its Facebook page as well as on YouTube.com, available after 6 p.m. on Saturday. To receive an email copy of the bulletin, call the church office at 804-725-2175. To join Zoom Coffee Hour on Sundays at 11:30 a.m., call the office for the ID number and pass code. Also on Sunday, the Virginia Diocesan bishops will lead an online worship service that will be posted on the Facebook page and on YouTube.

The Fall Bible Class, “Armchair Pilgrimage: Looking for God Everywhere,” will begin Sept. 14.

LightHouse

LightHouse Church, Ordinary, will have both the 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday services. The 8 o’clock service is for at-risk individuals (face masks required), and the 10 o’clock service is family-friendly. An online service at 10 o’clock will be available for those at home on Facebook page: www.facebook.com/lwcfb.

The Kids Ministry will have a Relaunch Leaders meeting from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 in the main sanctuary.

New Point Friends

The sermon title of Pastor Thomas Bunting of New Point Friends Church at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “The King, David, God’s Leader.”

Spring Hill Baptist

Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, will continue its new series from I Thessalonians chapter one at 11 a.m. Sunday. This week’s message examines the reason the Thessalonians were considered “examples of faith” by the Apostle Paul and how they were soon expecting the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

St. Matthew United Methodist

St. Thomas Anglican Mission

St. Thomas Anglican Mission will relaunch its online worship services on Sunday. The service will premiere on the church’s Facebook page at 10 a.m. Simply search for St. Thomas Anglican Mission and you will be able to participate in the service, or you can go to the church’s website at www.MathewsAnglican.org and watch from there.

The First United Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor E. Randolph Graham of the First United Baptist Church, White Marsh, for the 9 a.m. Sunday service will be “Social Distancing: Its Application via the Good Samaritan Parable.” The service will be drive-up and streamed via Facebook Live and Zoom Call.

Ware Episcopal

Ware Episcopal Church, Gloucester, will gather for outdoor worship at 9:30 a.m. Sunday on the south lawn of the historic church. There will be live instrumental music, scripture readings, and a celebration of Holy Communion. The rector, the Rev. Scott Parnell, will preach. Services can also be viewed live via Facebook or the church’s YouTube account.

Westville Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Bob Huff of Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, at 11 a.m. Sunday communion service will be “To Do the Will of Him who Sent Me.” A special offering will be taken for the “Mission Dignity” program
Wednesday Bible study, “Exodus,” will begin at 4 p.m.

Westville Christian

The sermon title of the Rev. Tim Dice, pastor of Westville Christian Church, Mathews, at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Who Needs a Job?”

Zion Poplars Baptist

Zion Poplars Baptist Church, Gloucester, continues to hold telephone conference services, 1-617-769-8975, at 11 a.m. every Sunday and 7 p.m. Wednesdays. The Rev. Vincent Haley, associate minister, will render the Sunday sermon and will be the Wednesday Bible study instructor.
