Services announced by local churches

Services and other activities in churches this week include the following:

Abingdon Episcopal

Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, will hold the Mass on the Grass at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by a fellowship picnic. Bring a side dish to share and a chair to sit in, a release said. The summer worship schedule of one Sunday service at 9:30 has begun.

Everyone is asked to fill out a favorite hymn form. Hymns will be chosen from the completed forms for summer worship.

Sunday School and Adult Formation are on a break and will resume in September.

Antioch Baptist

Deacon Carroll Jackson will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Antioch Baptist Church, Susan.

Apostles Lutheran

Apostles Lutheran Church, Gloucester, will hold the sixth Sunday after Pentecost worship service at 10 a.m. A coffee fellowship will be held after the service. Links to the service via Zoom or YouTube are on the church’s website at apostles-elca.org.

Beech Grove Baptist

Beech Grove Baptist Church, Coke, will hold a fifth Sunday night musical program at 6:30 featuring “Heaven Bound” of Chesapeake. A dessert social will follow the program.

Bellamy United Methodist

Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will hold the sixth Sunday of Pentecost, with one worship service at 10:30 a.m. The Faith Builders Bible Study will meet at 9:20 and adult Sunday school class will meet at 9:30. The Youth Group meets at 5 p.m. on Sunday with dinner provided.

The Loaves and Britches Food and Diaper Ministry will be held from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday.

Bethany United Methodist

Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, will have only one service on Sunday followed by the fifth Sunday family meal. The sermon title of Pastor Paul Song at 10 a.m. will be “Embody the Image of God in Life.” Nursery for infants to 3-year-olds is available at 9:40.

Bethel Church of Mathews

Bethel Church of Mathews, Onemo, will hold Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. The church will join Salem Church Mathews for a special fifth Sunday service at 10:30 in the fellowship hall of Salem.

The church continues to collect non-perishable items for Hands Across Mathews.

Beulah Church of New Point

Kenneth Whitehead of North, will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Beulah Church of New Point.

Church of Francis de Sales Roman Catholic

Church of Francis de Sales Roman Catholic, Mathews, will hold a “Renewal Worship” service from 3:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday. The service will be led by Joseph Schirmer and Pastor Miguel Sanchev and will include praise and worship, testimonials and altar calls.

Church of the Living Word

The sermon title of Dr. Gregory Woodard of Church of the Living Word, Hayes, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “Move a Little Further.”
“H.O.P.E.” will be the 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Bible study topic.

Gleaning Baptist

The Good Samaritan Foodbank will be closed Wednesday and will reopen on Wednesday, July 10, for drive-in service at Gleaning Baptist Church, Gloucester. Operational hours will be noon-2 p.m.

Gloucester Point Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Dillon Evans of Gloucester Point Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Is God the Author of Sin?”

Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist

The Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist will hold its regular session at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Gloucester, on Saturday. The Executive Board will meet at 10 a.m. Each church should send two delegates, a release said.

The GURA Youth Department will hold a fish fry at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church, Gloucester.

Church school will be held at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, followed by “Youth Period.” Brenda Davis of Rising Valley Baptist Church, James Store, is the GURA Youth Advisor. The Rev. Larry Arrington, pastor of First Morning Star Baptist Church, Bena, will render the message. The choir of Zion Hill will sing.

Grace Covenant Presbyterian

The sermon title of Pastor Dorothy Hood of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will be “Life After Death.”

Gwynn’s Island Baptist

Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church will hold its drive-in worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday around the gazebo of Gwynn’s Island Civic League. Parking begins at 9:15. This will be the church’s “Music Sunday.” Attendees will celebrate God through the voices and instruments of numerous musicians, and the band “Island Praise,” a release said.

Kingston Episcopal Parish

Kingston Episcopal Parish, Mathews, will observe 6 Pentecost with Holy Eucharist Rite I at 8 a.m. at Christ Church on Williams Wharf Road and Holy Eucharist Rite II at 10:30 a.m. at Kingston Chapel at the parish house on Main Street.

The Monday 1 p.m. and Tuesday 7 p.m. classes, “Ladder to the Light,” will be held. The Wednesday noon Holy Eucharist/Healing service takes place at the parish house.

Sunday and special services are livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.

Mathews Baptist

The sermon title at 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday in Mathews Baptist Church, Hudgins, will be “Born (Again) Free.”

Morning Glory Baptist

Morning Glory Baptist Church, Gloucester, will hold Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. via conference call; dial-in 605-313-4440, access: 6913538.
Weekly prayer call will be 8:45 a.m. Saturday via conference using the same number.

Weekly Bible study will be 7 p.m. Wednesday via conference call, as we join with New Mount Zion Baptist Church, Gloucester. During June, MGBC will host.

Mount Zion United Methodist

The sermon title of the Rev. Calvin Griffin of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Gloucester, at 9 a.m. Sunday will be “Power of Christ.”

New Point Friends

New Point Friends Church will hold a “Whole Lot of Music” service at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Newington Baptist

Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester, will celebrate “VBS Sunday” at 10:30 a.m. The sermon title of Pastor Chris Grella will be “Faith vs. Fear.” The nursery, for infants and toddlers, will be available.

No Wednesday night activities on July 3.

Olive Branch Global Methodist

Olive Branch Global Methodist Church, Gloucester, will hold worship at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. A fifth Sunday coffee and donuts will be served during the Bible study at 10:30.

Salem

Salem Church Mathews and Bethel Church of Mathews will hold a combined special fifth Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall of Salem. There will be special music and a great opportunity to worship together, a release said. The sermon title of Pastor Garry Livermon will be “A Sacrifice of Praise.”

Salem Community

Salem Community Church, Gloucester, will hold adult Bible study at 10 a.m. Sunday, followed by worship at 11 o’clock. The Craft Store will be open after the service.

Game night will be at 6 o’clock tonight, Thursday, June 27.

Salem Kids in Mission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 12.

Singleton United Methodist

The sermon title of the Rev. Calvin Griffin of Singleton United Methodist Church, Ware Neck, at 11 a.m. will be “The Power of Christ.”

Monday Bible study, “When God Whispers your Name,” will begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday night Bible study at 7 o’clock will discuss a new book, “Invitation to the New Testament.”

Spring Hill Baptist

The Rev. Ross Davis, pastor of Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, will speak on “Running a Successful Race” at 11 a.m. Sunday.

St. James On-the-Glebe Anglican

St. James On-the-Glebe Anglican Church, Gloucester will celebrate St. Peter’s Day with traditional Evensong at 5 p.m. Saturday.

For the fifth Sunday after Trinity, Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., followed by a weekly potluck fellowship. Morning prayer will be at 8:30 and adult and children’s Catechesis at 9:30.

On Thursday, July 4, Independence Day will be celebrated with a 10 a.m. Mass.

The Mass is offered every Friday at noon.

The Kingdom Church Ministries

Apostle Alroy Henderson will preach at the 10 a.m. service Sunday at the Kingdom Church Ministries International, meeting at the Cobbs Creek Arts Center, Mathews.

Union Baptist

Pastor Jared Berry will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Union Baptist Church, Hayes. Choir practice will be held at 5 p.m.

Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock

Hugo Elfinstone and Janet Hemming will facilitate “SMS: The Search for a New Minister” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock, White Stone.

Westville Baptist

The Rev. Lytle Buckingham of Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, will continue his series of sermons on the Lord’s Prayer at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. His sermon title will be “Our Daily Bread.” Sunday school, “Acts,” will precede the service at 9:45.

Wednesday Bible study on II John will begin at 3 p.m.

Non-perishable items are being collected for Hands Across Mathews and items for Mathews Social Services.

Westville Christian

The sermon title of Pastor Tim Dice of Westville Christian Church, Mathews, at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “We All Need Prayer and Healing.” A fifth Sunday potluck will follow the service.

White Marsh Baptist

White Marsh Baptist Church, 5123 George Washington Memorial Highway, will hold Vacation Bible School, “The Armor of God,” at 6:30 p.m. July 14-17.
