Services and specials announced by local churches

Services and other activities in churches this week include the following:

Abingdon Episcopal

Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, will hold Sunday services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. At 9:30, Sunday school continues Episco 101 in preparation for the Bishop’s visit. The foundations of the Anglican tradition will be discussed.
Lector and Lay Eucharistic Minister training will be held at 11:15 a.m. Saturday in the main church building.

Antioch Baptist

The Rev. Julia Forrest will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday in-person service in Antioch Baptist Church, Susan. The service will also be on Facebook Live at weareantioch1869.

Apostles Lutheran

Apostles Lutheran Church, Gloucester, will hold the fourth Sunday after Epiphany service at 10 a.m. Sunday. This will be an “agape” worship service and meal which will be held in the fellowship hall. The annual congregational meeting will be held after the service as well as Sunday school for all ages. Links to the service via Zoom or YouTube are on the church’s website at apostles-elca.org.

Bellamy United Methodist

Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will have worship at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The Faith Builders Bible study will meet at 9:20 a.m. and the adult Sunday school class at 9:30. Children ages Pre-K to fifth grade will have Children’s Church at 10:30. The Well Contemporary Worship service will gather at 11:30. The Youth Group meets at 5 p.m., with dinner provided.

The Loaves and Britches Food and Diaper Ministry will be held from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday.

Bethany United Methodist

The sermon title of Pastor Paul Song of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, at 8:30 a.m. (informal worship) and at 11 a.m. (traditional worship) will be “You are Loved Passionately.” Sunday school for all ages begins at 9:45. Nursery for infants to 3-year-olds is available beginning at 9:40.

Bethel Baptist

Bethel Baptist Church, Gloucester, will return to its worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. James L. Harris will preach. Sunday School will return to in-person beginning at 9:30; it will also be virtual.

Bible study will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday which will be held virtually. Mr. Harris and friends will visit the residents of the Riverside Convalescent Center in Saluda at 10:30 a.m. next Thursday, Feb. 6. They will sing to the residents and he will share a special message.

Bethel Church of Mathews

Terry Johnson will be the speaker at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Bethel Church of Mathews, Onemo. New members will be taken into the church and a luncheon will follow. Main dish, dessert and beverages will be provided; everyone is to bring a favorite side dish.

The Ladies’ Ministry and Missions will meet at the home of Kathryn Diggs on Wednesday with Nancy Rowe leading the program.

On Feb. 9, the ladies’ missionary group will deliver soup with love to shut-ins after the worship service.

Beulah Church of New Point

The sermon title of Pastor Dede Parrish of Beulah Church of New Point, at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “No Boundaries.”
Bible study will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Central United Methodist

The sermon title of the Rev. Rebecca Rumburg, pastor of Central United Methodist Church, Mathews, at 9:15 a.m. Sunday will be “What is Love?” Sunday school follows at 10:15.

Church of the Living Word

The sermon title of Dr. Gregory Woodard at 10 a.m. Sunday in Church of the Living Word, Hayes, will be “We Are Coming Out.”

“First Fruit Consecration” will be the Wednesday Bible study topic at 6:30 p.m.

First Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Ward Warren of First Baptist Church, Ordinary, at the 10 a.m. Sunday service will be “Made In His Image.” Church school is at 9 o’clock.

Wednesday Bible study will be at 1 p.m.

First Morning Star Baptist

First Morning Star Baptist Church, Bena, will host a Book Signing and Meet and Greet from noon-2 p.m. Saturday for the Rev. Haywood Barnes Jr., the author of the book, “365 Daily Devotions.” The Rev. Mr. Barnes is an associate pastor of Calvary Chapel, Newport News, and a former Senior Pastor of First Morning Star.

The sermon title of Pastor Larry J. Arrington at the 11 a.m. Sunday service will be “Survive and Thrive.” The in-person service will be broadcasted by teleconference 804-256- 2475, and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page.

Gloucester Point Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Dillon Evans of Gloucester Point Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Jesus on Divorce.”

Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist

The Youth Department of Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist has rescheduled its Dr. Martin Luthur King Jr. breakfast. It will be held from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Gloucester. The Rev. John Wright, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, Saluda, will be the speaker. Joelle Forrest of First Baptist Church, Ordinary, will be the worship leader. Gwynn’s Island Baptist

The sermon title of Dr. Ed Jordan, pastor of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “A Personal Letter from Jesus.” Special music will be by Tyrone Hudgins.

The Men’s Bible Study Group meets Tuesdays at 9 a.m. at the church, and the Ladies Bible Study meets Thursdays at 10 a.m. On Sunday mornings at 8:30, there is Bible study class for all ages.

Kingston Episcopal

Kingston Episcopal Parish, Mathews, will observe the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple Sunday with Holy Eucharist Rite I at 8 a.m. at Christ Church on Williams Wharf Road and Holy Eucharist Rite II at 10:30 a.m. at Kingston Chapel on Main Street.

Wednesday noon Holy Eucharist/Healing takes place at the parish house.

Mathews Baptist

“Who is My Neighbor?” will be the sermon title at the 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday services in Mathews Baptist Church, Hudgins.

Mathews Chapel United Methodist

The sermon title of Pastor Angie Hoen of Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, Cobbs Creek, at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Hometown Boy.”

Morning Glory Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Donna Freeman of Morning Glory Baptist Church, Gloucester, at the 11 a.m. Sunday service will be “Are You Filled with the Holy Spirit?” There will be weekly recitations commemorating Black History. Newington Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Chris Grella of Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will be “Good and Angry?” The nursery, for infants and toddlers, will be available. Various Sunday school classes meet at 9 o’clock.

Olive Branch Global Methodist

The Rev. Randall Cupp, pastor of Olive Branch Global Methodist Church, Harcum, will preach at the 9:30 service. Bible study will follow at 10:30. Pick up an order form for Super Bowl Super Subs. Orders need to be in by Sunday with pick-up on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 9.

Westville Baptist

The sermon title of the Rev. Lytle Buckingham at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday communion service in Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, will be “Focus on Christ.” The Sunday school, “Exodus,” will precede the service, at 9:45.

The church is collecting soups for Hands Across Mathews in recognition of Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 9.

Westville Christian

The Rev. Bill Spangler-Dunning, Regional Minister of the Christian Church in Virginia, will be the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Westville Christian Church, Mathews. He will also install the new officers for the year.

Zion Baptist

The Rev. Vernon L. Woodard of Newport News, will be the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Zion Baptist Church, Cardinal. Sunday school will precede the service at 9:45.

On the first Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 6-7 p.m., Bay School Arts will teach all ages in the “Open Arts in the Neighborhood” program in which paint, clay, pastels, and a variety of other media will be utilized. Join us for a fun, creative, exploration of art through time; the community is welcome, a release said. Bible study will begin afterwards, between 7-7:15. On the second and fifth Wednesdays, Bible study will begin at 7 p.m.

Zion Hill Baptist

Pastor Eugene Comithier II of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Gloucester, will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday service. The Senior Choir will sing. In-person Sunday school will be held at 9:45 a.m.
