Antioch Baptist

Apostles Lutheran

Apostles Lutheran Church, Gloucester, will hold the seventh Sunday of Easter (Christ’s prayer for his disciples) worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday. A special offering will be received for ELCA World Hunger. A coffee fellowship will be held after the service.

Bellamy United Methodist

Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will gather for worship at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 Sunday to observe Ascension of the Lord. The Faith Builders Bible Study will meet at 9:15 and the adult Sunday school class will meet at 9:30. Children’s Church will be held at 10:30. The United Women in Faith will meet following the 10:30 service and the Youth Group will meet at 5 p.m., with dinner provided.

The Loaves and Britches Food and Diaper ministry will be held from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday and the XYZs (Xtra Years of Zest) Senior Adult Ministry will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Bethany United Methodist

The sermon title of Pastor John Choi of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, for the 8:30 a.m. Sunday informal service and 11 o’clock traditional service will be “Our Leader Ascends to God.” Sunday school for all ages begins at 9:45.

Bethel Baptist

The Christian Education Ministry of Bethel Baptist Church, Gloucester, will sponsor a “Chat and Chew” session at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church’s fellowship hall. The session will feature Sam Carter-Shamai, an interdisciplinary urban planner, cultural researcher, and artist with nearly a decade of experience working across municipal government, design consulting, and non-profit leadership. A project emerged from a personal effort to retrace his family’s presence across North America which began in Gloucester.

The Rev. James Harris & Friends will conduct a praise and worship service at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Walter Reed Convalescent Home, Gloucester.

The sermon title of Dr. Katrina Brown at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Listening to the Hype.” Dr. Brown will also lead the 7 p.m. Wednesday Bible study.

Bethel Church of Mathews

Bethel Church of Mathews, will hold a prayer breakfast at 7:45 a.m. Sunday. This will be the last one until September. Bible study will be at 10 o’clock, followed by worship with Pastor Kenneth Whitehead at 11.

Lou Anne Diggs is planning an inside yard sale on June 13. Everyone is reminded to bring donations the week of the sale.

A one-day Bible Camp is scheduled for July 11 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Beulah Church of New Point

The Rev. Coleman Tyler will be the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Beulah Church of New Point.

Central United Methodist

The sermon title of the Rev. Rebecca Rumburg of Central United Methodist Church, Mathews, at 9:15 a.m. Sunday will be “Let Us Pray!” There will be a coffee fellowship after the service. Sunday school follows at 10:15.

Church of the Living Word

The sermon title of Pastor Tiffany M. Foreman of Church of the Living Word, Hayes, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “Strength to Thrive.”

The Wednesday Bible study topic at 6:30 p.m. will be “The Transformed Life.”

First Baptist, Mathews

The officers and congregation of First Baptist Church, Mathews, will celebrate its 161st church anniversary on Sunday, May 24. Guided by the theme, “A Church committed to Living in the Spirit of Unity, Love, and Peace” (Ephesians 4), the day’s observances will begin with worship at 11:15 a.m., followed by an anniversary dinner, and concluding with the anniversary afternoon service at 3 o’clock. The Rev. Jason N. Knight, pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, will be the guest preacher.

First Baptist, Ordinary

The sermon title of Pastor Ward Warren of First Baptist Church, Ordinary, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “Facing God’s No.” Church school will be at 9 o’clock. The church will celebrate the pastor’s 11th pastoral anniversary at 3 p.m. Dinner will be at 1:30. The Rev. Vincent Pryor and New Mt. Zion Baptist Church will be special guests.

Wednesday Bible study will be at 1 p.m.

First Morning Star Baptist

“Do You Have Good Religion?” will be the sermon topic of Pastor Larry J. Arrington of First Morning Star Baptist Church, Bena, at 11 a.m. Sunday. Holy Communion will be observed. The service will be broadcast by teleconference (804-256-2475) and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page.

Gloucester Point Baptist

The Rev. Michael Indorf, pulpit supply pastor of Gloucester Point Baptist Church, will speak at the 11 a.m. Sunday service. Sunday school will precede the service at 9:45.

Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist

The Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist will hold a spring revival at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 19-Thursday, May 21 at The First United Baptist Church, White Marsh.

Pastors and their church families will participate. They will include Tuesday, the Rev. Eugene Comithier and Zion Hill Baptist Church of Gloucester; Wednesday, the Rev. Vincent Pryor, GURA president, and New Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Gloucester; and Thursday, May 21, the Rev. Edgar Graham and The First United Baptist Church.

Grace Covenant Presbyterian

The sermon title of guest speaker Pastor Keith Hill of Richmond, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, will be “On God’s Refrigerator Door.”

A second worship service will be added during the summer beginning June 14 and ending Aug. 30. This is for families who cannot make it to church on Sunday morning. A few characteristics of the service include: The service will be intentionally inclusive of children, involving all ages throughout. The liturgy will be simpler overall and be a bit shorter than the morning service. There will be a mix of hymns from the morning together with simplified worship choruses that can be played on guitar. The sermon and scriptures will be the same as the morning service. The overall feeling of the service will be a bit more casual and the service will end with ice cream outside (weather permitting), a release said.

Groves Memorial Presbyterian

The sermon title of the Rev. Michael Condrey of Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church, Hayes, at the 10 a.m. Sunday service will be “Give God the Glory.”

The Shelby Friend Circle will meet at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

Gwynn’s Island Baptist

Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church holds its outdoor drive-in worship services at the Gwynn’s Island Civic League’s Pavilion at 10 a.m. Sunday. Parking begins at 9:15; in case of stormy weather, worship will be in the church’s sanctuary.

The sermon title of Dr. Ed Jordan, pastor, will be “How is Your Heart?” Special music will feature Heather Mackenzie Hopkins. Bible study meets at 8:30 in the church’s sunroom.

The Ladies’ Bible Study meets at 10 a.m. Thursdays and the Men’s Bible Study meets at 9 a.m. Tuesdays.

Kingston Episcopal

Kingston Episcopal Parish, Mathews, will observe Holy Eucharist Rite I Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Christ Church on Williams Wharf Road. A Celtic service will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Kingston Chapel at the parish house on Main Street.
Monday and Tuesday classes are cancelled for the present. Men’s Bible Study will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday; Wednesday noon Holy Eucharist/Healing Service will be held in Meditation Chapel, both at the parish house.

Mathews Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Brian Kramer of Mathews Baptist Church, Hudgins, at the 9 a.m. and 11 o’clock Sunday services will be “God’s Guidance for Grads.” Graduates from the congregation will be recognized in the early service. Sunday school classes for all ages begin at 10.

Mathews Chapel United Methodist
