Services and other activities announced by local churches

Services and other activities in churches this week include the following:

Abingdon Episcopal

Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, announced that diapers and wipes are being collected this month to benefit Three Rivers Healthy Families; and that Panther Packs, food packs for students at Abingdon Elementary School, are packed on Wednesday at noon.

Abingdon Church, in addition to its Sunday services at 8 and 10:30 a.m., is open for silent prayer from noon-1 p.m. each Wednesday.

Antioch Baptist

Sareeta Spriggs of Calvary Revival, Norfolk, will be the guest speaker for Woman’s Day at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Antioch Baptist Church, Susan. John Hudgins will provide special music. Apostles Lutheran

Apostles Lutheran Church, Gloucester, will offer letters to government representatives about the upcoming Farm Bill, and will highlight May 20 as World Bee Day during a coffee fellowship on Sunday, following the 10 a.m. Seventh Sunday of Easter worship service.

Bethany United Methodist

Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, is taking registration at wwwl.bethanyumc-gp.org for Vacation Bible School, to be held June 18-22, and Music Camp, July 17-21.

The Rev. Paul Song, pastor, will preach on the topic “My Heart was Strangely Warmed” at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services on Sunday.

It was announced that the Red Cross will hold its annual End of Watch Blood Drive in the church fellowship hall from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. next Thursday, May 25. To schedule a donation, visit www.redcrossblood.org.

The Rev. Dr. Katrina Brown will preach at the noon service Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church, Gloucester. Bethel United Methodist

Bethel United Methodist Church, Onemo, will conduct a Service of Baptism for Sadie Nicole Foster at 10:50 a.m. Sunday. A potluck lunch will follow, and those attending are asked to bring a side dish, a notice said.

Baby items for Mathews Department of Social Services are being collected for the month of May.

Central United Methodist

Pastor John Choi will speak on the topic “Repentance and Forgiveness of Sin” at the 9:15 a.m. service Sunday in Central United Methodist Church, Mathews.

The United Methodist Men will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall for breakfast and fellowship.

Church of the Living Word

The message of the Rev. Dr. Gregory Woodard at the 10 a.m. revival service on Sunday at Church of the Living Word, Hayes, will be “It is Time to Shift.”

The topic for the 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Bible study will be I Corinthians.

First Baptist, Mathews

First Baptist Church, Mathews, will celebrate its 158th anniversary on Sunday, May 21. The Rev. Jaymorle L. Ingram, Associate/Executive Pastor of First Baptist Church, Denbigh, will speak at the 11:15 a.m. service. The Rev. J. Winston Redmon, pastor of Emmaus Baptist Church, North, will speak at the 3 p.m. service. He will be accompanied by his choir, ushers, officers and church family.

First Baptist, Ordinary

The Rev. Denton Brandy of White Marsh Baptist Church will preach at 11 a.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, Ordinary, on the topic, “Interceding for Others.” Church school begins at 9:30.

Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m., and at 3 o’clock, First Baptist will celebrate the eighth pastoral anniversary of the Rev. Ward Warren. Special guest will be the Rev. Dr. Sedgwick Easley of Hempstead, New York.

The church will hold Bible study at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. It also announced that effective June 4, Church school will be at 9 a.m. and worship service at 10.

First Morning Star Baptist

The Rev. Wil Early, Associate Minister, will give the sermon at 11 a.m. Sunday at First Morning Star Baptist Church, Bena. Holy Communion will be observed.

The service will be in-person, broadcast by teleconference (804-256-2475), and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page.

Gloucester Point Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Dillon Evans of Gloucester Point Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Spirit Empowered Witnesses,” the first in a new series on “Acts: To the Ends of the Earth.”

Grace Covenant Presbyterian

The sermon title of the Rev. Tommy Nance, guest minister at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will be “When You’re Going Down to Egypt.”

Groves Presbyterian

The sermon title of the Rev. Michael Condrey of Groves Presbyterian Church, Glass, at the 10 a.m. Sunday service will be “Jesus Prays for Us.”

Gwynn’s Island Baptist

The Rev. Dr. Ed Jordan, pastor of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, will preach on the topic “When God arrives…” in an outdoor drive-in service to be held at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Civic League Park, across from the church. Michele Thacker will provide special music.

Kingston Episcopal Parish

Kingston Episcopal Parish, Mathews, will observe Ascension Day with congregations of Abingdon and Ware churches at Ware Episcopal Church, Gloucester, at 6 o’clock tonight.

Holy Eucharist Rite I will be held at 8 a.m. Sunday at Christ Church on Williams Wharf Road, Mathews, and Rite II at 10:30 a.m. at Kingston Chapel on Main Street.

The May Celtic Service will take place at 5:30 p.m. at King-ston Chapel. A release said, “People of all faiths are invited to attend this meditative candlelight service and enjoy the beauty of silence, prayers and scripture.” Strings & Things Quartet will play traditional Celtic music throughout the service.

The new Christian Formation class, “Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom,” continues at 1 p.m. Monday and 7 p.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Stewardship Committee will meet at 10 a.m. in the library. The Wednesday noon Healing/Holy Eucharist service continues in Meditation Chapel at the parish house.

Mt. Zion United Methodist

The sermon title of the Rev. Calvin Griffin of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Gloucester, at the 9 a.m. in-person Sunday service will be “Working with the Power of the Holy Spirit.”

New Point Friends

The sermon title of Pastor Thomas Bunting of New Point Friends Church at 11 a.m. on Sunday will be “Indispensable Things.”

Newington Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Chris Grella of Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will be “A Welcoming Community,” part of his continuing series on the church’s vision. The service will also be livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page and YouTube. Sunday school starts at 9 o’clock. The nursery, for infants and toddlers, will be available.

Wednesday activities include choir at 5:45 p.m., and adult Bible study, youth and Kids Life, all at 6:30.

Olive Branch United Methodist

The United Methodist Men of Olive Branch United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will have a breakfast fellowship at 8 a.m. Sunday. Worship will be at 9:30, followed by Sunday school at 10:30.

St. James On-the-Glebe Anglican

St. James On-the-Glebe Anglican Church, Gloucester, will hold an Ascension Day service followed by cookout at 6 p.m. today. A weekly potluck fellowship will follow Sunday morning services at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30.

The “Chicken Coop” Chapel will be open daily for quiet and prayer between 9 a.m. Morning and 5 p.m. Evening Prayer.

Salem United Methodist, Gloucester

Salem United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will have worship at 11 a.m. Sunday. Bible study, “In the Beginning,” will meet at 10 o’clock Sunday and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Craft Store will be open after worship.

USDA Food Pantry will be open from 9-11 a.m. Saturday.

Singleton United Methodist

The 11 a.m. service at Singleton United Methodist Church, Ware Neck, will be led by United Methodist Men, with a message delivered by Audra Matney. After the service, Snack Packs will be assembled for Peasley Middle School. Bible studies will be resumed in June, a notice said.

Spring Hill Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Ross Davis of Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Put on the New Life Virtues.”

The First United Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor E. Randolph Graham of the First United Baptist Church, White Marsh, at the 11 a.m. Sunday service will be “Pathways to Spiritual Understanding: Giving and Stewardship.” Praise and worship will begin at 10:45. The in-person service will be streamed via Zoom and Facebook Live.

Union Baptist

Pastor Jared Berry of Union Baptist Church, Hayes, will continue his series from the book of Luke at the 11 a.m. Sunday service. Choir practice will be held from 4-5:30 p.m.

Westville Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Bob Huff of Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service will be “Changes in Attitude.” Sunday school will precede the service at 9:45.

Wednesday Bible study will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Zion Hill Baptist

Zion Hill Baptist Church, Gloucester, will celebrate its 150th anniversary in a service at 3 p.m. Sunday, with a sermon by the Rev. Jeffrey D. Burrell of Atlanta, Georgia, and music by the JBC Community Choir.

Sunday will also bring a sermon at the 11 a.m. service by Pastor Eugene Comithier II, music by the Inspirational Voices, and Sunday school at 9:45 a.m.

A dinner will be served from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Zion Poplars Baptist
