SELMA BESSIE CASTAGNA

Selma Bessie Castagna, affectionately known as “Momma C,” passed away on May 30, 2013 in Gloucester, Va., where she resided in the Gloucester Assisted Living Facility, The Gloucester House for the past three years.

She was born in Barbourville, Ky., on June 6, 1919, one of 13 children. Her parents were Enoch and Bessie Long Smith. Selma had 12 siblings who predeceased her. She was married to Philip Castagna for 35 years who was also predeceased.

Selma is survived by her immediate family, daughter Gina Castagna Knollenberg; son, Carl John Castagna; daughter-in-law, Desiree DeMent Castagna, and granddaughter, Jennifer Castagna.

A devoted mother and friend to many, she most enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening as a loved hobby, reading, coaching the young and old on how to read, discussing politics and generally coaching people all her life.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 13, 2013, from 3-6 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Funeral service and interment will be held at a later date to be announced at Arlington National Cemetery where Mom will be put to rest beside our father.
