Section of Burleigh Road closes for construction project

A reconstruction project will require a section of Burleigh Road (Route 615) in Gloucester to close for the next 10 weeks.

Kelly Hannon, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said that between March 3 and May 22 the area near the “S” curve on Burleigh Road just east of Route 616 (Belroi Road) will be closed to through traffic in the work zone.

Crews will remove soil, finish road construction work, and install two new drainage pipes underneath the road, Hannon said.

Construction of the overall project is expected to be completed in June, Hannon said. Construction actually began in that area in late 2014, with one-lane, alternating traffic controlled by a flagging crew. However, a complete road closure in that area is necessary to expedite the work, she said.

Signs have been posted along the detour route, and motorists should allow approximately five additional minutes of travel time due to the detour.
