Second hearing Tuesday on floodplain ordinance

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has suggested a change to the proposed Mathews County Floodplain Management Ordinance that will be the subject of a second public hearing before the Mathews County Board of Supervisors at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse on Court Street.

According to an e-mail sent from Charley Banks, Virginia National Flood Insurance Program Coordinator, to Mathews County Administrator Mindy Moran, the suggested change would insert language in Section 4.3 A and B that would address the elevation requirement in VE zones.

The added language is already a part of the ordinance in Section 3.1, said Moran, and the change would simply reiterate the requirement. The new language says that new construction in the VE zone “shall have the lowest horizontal structural member elevated to or above the base flood elevation (BFE), per Section 3.1.A.4.”
