Sea Scouts chapter receives charter

The Mathews Maritime Foundation has received its charter from the Boys Scouts of America for a local Sea Scouts chapter, Sea Scout Ship 1791.

The chapter, or “ship,” has 10 registered scouts and 15 registered adult leaders, said a press release. In addition, 10 organizations and individuals have offered training and on-the-water opportunities to the scouts.

More members are welcome, said ship leader John Bonner. Sea Scouts is for boys and girls between the ages of 13 (must have completed ninth grade) and 21 who see boating as a worthwhile accomplishment, he said. Anyone interested is welcome to come to the Mathews Memorial Library conference room on Main Street from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22 or the Gloucester County Library, room two, Main Street Center, from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23. A boat-handling Virtual Simulator will be available on three television screens, controlled by the ship’s wheel and engine controls.
