The Mathews Maritime Foundation has organized a new Sea Scout Ship for girls and boys ages 13-21. The first open house to learn more about the program is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. aboard the “Peggy,” which is docked at the Gwynn’s Island Boat Yard.
Sea Scouts Ships are similar to Boy and Girl Scout troops, but there are some great differences, according to MMF spokesperson Marcy Benouameur. Those already in a scout troop can seek multiple registrations that would allow them to participate in both groups, but membership in a scout troop is not necessary to join the Sea Scouts.
“So, if you have a bit of pirate and adventurer in you, follow the ship to a sea of training in leadership and seamanship,” Benouameur said. She added that sea scouting is not all nautical and programs are available that teach pistol and high velocity rifle skills.
