School briefs

Linda Downey, the physical education teacher at Abingdon Elementary School, was honored with the Jump Rope for Heart Recognition Award last month during the annual Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Convention in Virginia Beach. Downey has coordinated Abingdon’s Jump Rope for Heart to benefit the American Heart Association since 1989. Abingdon was 14th in the state for money raised through Jump Rope for Heart during the 2012-2013 school year with a contribution of $12,741 to the AHA. 

Lauren Ashley Saulman of Gloucester received a bachelor of science degree in nursing with honors from James Madison University during commencement ceremonies Saturday. Saulman is employed as a neonatal intensive care nurse at the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, Norfolk.
