School board to return $100,000+ to county

The Mathews County School Board anticipates returning a little more than $100,000 to the county, unexpended funds from the school division’s 2018-2019 fiscal year budget.

The school board met last Thursday morning in the School Board Conference Room to close the books on the current fiscal year, although some outstanding obligations (most notably the division’s August payroll and utility bills) and sales tax receipts will have to be accrued back to FY 2018-2019.

The $106,264.49 the school board expects to return to the county represents less than 1 percent of the overall $14.34 million budget, said business and finance director Kristi Anthony.

“We try to leave a buffer every year,” Anthony said. She did recall one year when the school board turned over only $14,926, although that amount was a little too close for comfort. “Typically, my comfort level is about $100,000,” superintendent Nancy Welch said.
