School board sets aside much of Tuesday’s agenda

Much of the Mathews County School Board’s agenda was set aside Tuesday night due to new state COVID-19 restrictions, with the only action items being the approval of personnel actions and monthly claims.

The agenda for the meeting, which lasted less than 45 minutes (including a 36-minute closed session), had originally included discussion of the new name for the county’s elementary school and the upcoming winter sports season, as well as the public comment periods, which were also done away with for this meeting, which was held in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.

Under guidelines adopted by the Virginia High School League, practices for the winter sports season are set to begin Dec. 7, with the first games to be held three weeks later.
