Due to a drop in projected enrollment, along with a desire to meet the state’s 4 percent pay increase, Mathews County Public Schools is requesting a rollover of about $140,000 from the school division’s FY26 budget to the current FY27 budget. The school board unanimously approved the request during Tuesday’s meeting, which was held in the Brooks Auditorium at the Thomas Hunter Education Center. The current budget was created based on an Average Daily Membership of 725 students. That number has since been reduced to 680, which is projected to result in the loss of $148,853 in state revenue. Earlier in the meeting, Dr. David S. Daniel explained the downward revision. K-12 enrollment drives the ADM, as the division does not receive basic aid for preschool students.
