School board proceeds to public hearing on budget

Few changes were made Tuesday night after the Mathews County School Board held its second budget work session Tuesday afternoon.

During the meeting in the Mathews High School media center, the board did add $20,000 to the draft to reflect what it expects will be the true cost of increased internet bandwidth for the school division, but other than that left the roughly $14.37 million budget untouched.

A public hearing on the proposed budget will be held at 6 o’clock Tuesday in the MHS media center. The school board will hold another work session on the budget immediately after.

The second draft of the budget presented by Superintendent of Schools Nancy Welch on Tuesday did include restoring the librarian position at Thomas Hunter Middle School, something that had been lost during the economic downturn of nearly a decade ago.
