School board approves bid for gym roof repair

Nearly a year and a half after structural problems were first discovered with the Lee-Jackson Elementary School gymnasium roof, it appears that its repair is imminent.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the Mathews County School Board unanimously approved a $236,000 bid to replace the damaged trusses and repair the failed roof.

First Class Contracting of Richmond, a division of Athens Building Corporation, submitted the lowest complete and responsive bid for the project, according to superintendent of schools Nancy Welch.

Welch will take this proposal to the Mathews County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday for its approval. The bid includes the completion of repairs within 45 days of the Notice to Proceed, and Welch is hopeful that work will be completed in time for the start of the 2017-2018 school year.
