School board approves Achilles security CIP request

The Gloucester School Board met Monday night in the T.C. Walker Education Center Auditorium in a special meeting to approve the appropriation request and acceleration of the fiscal year 2024 capital improvement project request for the Achilles Elementary School security vestibule.

“We are fortunate to receive [school security equipment grants] funding in the amount of a little over $233,000,” said Dr. Walter Clemons, division superintendent. The grant requires a 25 percent match, which would be $58,000. The total project would cost a little over $290,000.

“When you get these grants, the funds have to be expended and the project has to be done by the end of the school year and so time is of the essence to be able to move forward,” continued Clemons.

The school board voted 6-0 to approve the request to the board of supervisors to appropriate a total of $291,725, $233,380 of which would be flow-through, with the remaining $58,345 coming from the county as an additional appropria...
