Saying farewell to a piece of history

The old oyster shucking house at the end of Mill Lane Road (Route 619) in Bohannon was burned to the ground by members of the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday evening to make way for the county’s planned public fishing pier. Neighbors gathered dockside to watch the flames engulf the former East River Boat Yard, which was purchased by Mathews County in 2005. Grant applications are in the works to fund construction of the fishing pier. Firefighters stood by to ensure that the controlled burn didn’t escape. Originally the site of a mill, the property became the Cuthbert and Hughes oyster shucking house around 1940. In the 1970s, it became the East River Boat Yard. Photo by Charlie Koenig
