SARAH PHIPPS FLAGGE

Sarah Phipps Flagge of Gloucester, formerly of Yorktown, passed away on March 4, 2017.

She was born in McKenney on April 3, 1930 to Frederick Wilmer and Ella Bobbitt Phipps. She attended McKenney High School and continued on to receive a degree in education from Richmond Professional Institute, now known as Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

In 1952, she married Bruce Flagge. They were married for 42 years until his death in 1995. She taught elementary and middle school in Char-

lottesville and Hampton for several years before settling in Yorktown (Marlbank Farm) to raise her family.

Sarah was an active member of Yorktown Baptist Church for over 50 years. She taught several Sunday School classes and was a deacon. She enjoyed singing with the choir. 

She was an antiques dealer for many years and enjoyed attending various auctions and flea markets. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved to hear of her grandchildren’s achievements.

Sarah is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Simmons of Norfolk, Elizabeth Barrett (John), and Susan Bunting of Gloucester. She also leaves a legacy of nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at Yorktown Baptist Church 237 Nelson Street, Yorktown, on April 7, 2017 at 11 a.m.
