SAR learns about Revolutionary War database at library

The Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of American Revolution visited Mathews Memorial Library on May 27 to learn about a project initiated by staff member Becky Barnhardt, head of history and genealogy.

Barnhardt has developed a list of names of 183 men from Mathews who served in the American Revolutionary War. The visiting chapter members indicated their intent is to use the information to identify gravesites where appropriate markers can be placed, said a press release. Resources used in the ongoing research project include pension applications, Revolutionary War bounty land grants, and miscellaneous papers located in the library’s archives.

While much has been written about events that occurred in what is now Mathews County, said the release, less is known about the men of Mathews who served valiantly in the War of Independence as members of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps.
