SANDRA SIMONS MIKULECKY

Sandra Simons Mikulecky, lovingly known as “Sandy” to her friends and “Nannie” to her family, passed away on October 19, 2026 at the age of 88. Born on November 9, 1937 in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, Sandy lived a life marked by generosity, compassion, and dedicated service to others. She had a gift for connecting with people and a genuine desire to make every community she called home a better place. Sandy spent 23 years working for SunTrust Bank in Richmond, Virginia, where she was known for her professionalism, warmth, and ability to brighten any room she entered. During her 18 years in Richmond, she developed a love for the arts and theater and devoted her time to local schools, reading to children and teaching valuable life skills, including how to balance a checkbook. For the last 22 years of her life, Sandy made Mathews County her home and immersed herself in community service. She was a devoted member of the Mathews Lions Club, serving as acting president and contributing countless hours to the organization’s mission. Her dedication extended to the Gwynn’s Island Civic League, where she helped organize the annual chicken dinner, provided refreshments for Bluegrass Nights, and worked tirelessly on the Gwynn’s Island Festival. Sandy’s passion for preserving local history led her to volunteer at the Gwynn’s Island Museum, where she devoted many hours to sharing and safeguarding the stories of the community she loved. Sandy had a generous heart, an infectious laugh, and a welcoming spirit. She never hesitated to help those in need and found joy in friendships old and new. She was known for her kindness, sense of humor, and steadfast presence. She also enjoyed jewelry, stylish clothes, and fashionable eyeglasses. Family and friends will always remember her radiant smile, joyful laughter, and spirited jitterbug dancing.

She is survived by her children, Jan Bassett (John) and Dan McDonald; her grandchildren, John (Ghie), Felicia (Jonathan), Sarah (Mathias), and Katy (Covian), and her great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Thea. Her family will forever cherish the love, joy, and selfless example she shared throughout her life.

Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Sandy are invited to celebrate her life on Sunday, November 15, at 1 p.m. at the Gwynn’s Island Civic League, 1996 Old Ferry Road, Gwynn, Va. This will be a potluck casual gathering in Sandy’s memory. Guests may bring a favorite dish, share a story, and/or donate a non-perishable food item to Hands Across Mathews. Those who wish to honor Sandy’s memory may also make a contribution to the Gwynn’s Island Museum, P.O. Box 313, Gwynn, Va. 23066, a place she dearly loved and faithfully supported.

Sandy’s legacy of kindness, service, and love for her community will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
