Sanders, a retirement community in Gloucester operated by Riverside Health, was named to the U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) 2025 America’s Best Nursing Home list. Riverside facilities Patriots Colony at Williamsburg and Riverside Lifelong Health & Rehabilitation Smithfield were also named to the list.
In 2023, nearly 1.2 million Americans called a skilled nursing facility home and that number is expected to rise in coming years, according to a news release.
For residents and their loved ones in need of a short-term rehabilitation facility or considering long-term care options, USNWR created the annual list to help aggregate and rank the best facilities by size and services offered in each state. Facilities are named to the list based on their performance data, recommendations of medical professionals, accreditations and resident satisfaction.
“It’s an honor to have three of our senior living facilities recognized among the top nursing homes in Virginia,” said Ed Heckler, president of Lifelong Health at Riverside. “This recognition is a testament to our team’s dedication and compassion to treat and care for our residents and make the facilities a safe, welcoming environment for them to truly call home.”
To calculate the Best Nursing Homes ratings, USNWR evaluated each nursing home’s performance using a variety of quality measures obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
For the 2025 edition, USNWR evaluated nearly 15,000 nursing homes on patient and resident outcomes, such as infection rates; staffing levels; potentially inappropriate reliance on antipsychotic drugs; health inspection results and other indicators of quality.
