A two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon, Oct. 9, 2022, on Route 17 at Woods Cross Roads has resulted in the death of an 80-year-old Saluda man, according to the Virginia State Police.

The crash occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Route 17 at the intersection with Route 610. The driver of a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado attempted to cross the northbound lanes from the median crossover and struck an S-10 Chevrolet truck that was traveling northbound on Route 17.

The driver of the S-10, Joseph F. Stephenson, 80, of the 4000 block of Buena Vista Road, Saluda, died upon impact.

The driver of the Silverado was charged with failing to yield the right of way. Notification has been made to family members. Neither alcohol nor speed was a contributing factor in the crash, the VSP reported.

This was the sixth traffic fatality in Gloucester in 2022.
