Salem Church Road fires not suspicious in nature

Two recent structure fires on Salem Church Road in Mathews were determined to not be suspicious in nature.

Mathews Volunteer Fire Chief Ronnie Lewis said that a fire in the 700 block of Salem Church Road on Nov. 23 that destroyed a mobile home had too much damage to determine the cause, but did not appear to be suspicious.

The person who lived in the rental property wasn’t home at the time, he said, and neighbors saw the fire and reported it. The fire department responded within three minutes, said Lewis, but the structure was already fully involved and “it went pretty quick.”

Five fire trucks responded to the scene. Lewis said the owner of the trailer will make sure the tenant is taken care of.
