Ryanne Tyler wins gold, two bronze at Virginia Special Olympics

Competitive swimmer Ryanne Tyler of Bavon came home with one gold medal and two bronze medals from the Special Olympics Virginia’s annual Summer Games, held June 10-11 in Richmond.

Ryanne, 17, took first place in the 25-yard freestyle and third in the 25-yard backstroke, held on Friday at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center. She returned Saturday, where she took home a bronze medal in the 50-yard freestyle. She competed in Division 5; the competitors, male and female, are grouped together by their times in regional meets.

She has been training since January for this competition as a part of Special Olympics Area 22, practicing at the Victory Family YMCA in Yorktown. Ryanne had been a competitive swimmer as a young girl, but multiple surgeries had put a hold on that for a while. And she’s glad to be able to get back into the pool and racing.
