RUTH TSCHAN

Ruth Tschan, 92, passed away peacefully in her Sanders Assisted Living apartment, Gloucester, on Dec. 27, 2017, with her faithful kitty “Sally” close by her.

Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 8, 1925, to Charles and Lucille Fox Smith. Ruth was known as “Demmie” to her beloved grandchildren and everyone else who knew her.

She loved her many years working for Colonial Williamsburg as an historical interpreter. She enjoyed writing and was an avid reader and had over 500 books that she had read on her Kindle.

Demmie never missed an opportunity to participate in family outings and especially loved her boat rides, as well as spending the holiday season in Ohio with her daughter’s family.

She will be fondly remembered for her joyous spirit. She lived 92 wonderful years, had a zest for life, was deeply devoted to family and friends by whom she was adored for her compassion, love and with the power of a smile.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Donald N. Tschan, M.D.

She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Dr. Donald Tschan Jr. (Susanna) and Charles Tschan; daughter, Martha Sowder (Gary); grandchildren, Christy Makoroff (Dave), Jamie Sowder (Erica), Kate Sowder, Megan Sowder, Chris Chumley (Cameron), Ted Tschan (Lori), Alex Tschan, Tyler Tschan, Anthony Tschan and Amanda Golden, and seven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life conducted by the Rev. Sven vanBaars was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. The family received friends prior to the service on Sunday from 1-2 o’clock at the funeral home.

In our mother’s memory, the family desires contributions be given to Abingdon Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 82, White Marsh, Va. 23183.
