RUTH JACOBS RUGGIERO

Ruth Jacobs Ruggiero, 90, of Gloucester, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family and friends.

“Boochie” as she was known by her family and friends, was born to the late George and Gertrude DeFord Jacobs on March 24, 1925 in North Carolina.

She travelled all over the world with her husband during his military career in the USMC. She loved to shop, whether it was a well-known store in the USA or dealing with locals in an open market in a foreign country. She always had to look and touch every item in the store before purchasing. Throughout the years in many places, she established “a home” for her family to be proud of.

She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Douglas A. Ruggiero and his wife Gail of Columbia, Md.

Ruth is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Col. Alexander “Al” S. Ruggiero, USMC-ret.; two sons, Robert W. Ruggiero and wife Sally of Austin, Texas, and George “Jerry” E. Ruggiero and wife Barbara of King George, Va.; three grandsons, Alexander Ruggiero and Marcus Richardson of Austin, Texas, and Bradley Ruggiero of King George, Va.; a sister, Patricia Swindell of New Bern, N.C., and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. A celebration of her life conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kathleen V. Price was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hawes Campbell, Dr. Charles Harris, Dr. Jay Eackles, and many other physicians, Riverside Hospice, Concordia Home Health, and her aides, Carmela Kelly and Cindy Wiatt.

In Ruth’s memory, contributions may be made to Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, 7358 Main Street, Gloucester, Va. 23061 or Abingdon Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 82, White Marsh, Va. 23183.
