Ruritan club donations

The Abingdon Ruritan Club recently made three separate $1,000 donations to community organizations. In top photo, club vice president Mary Lou Shepherd, at right, presents a check to Arlene Armentor, Executive Director of the Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic. The idea for a local medical clinic to serve the “working poor” in Gloucester and Mathews counties or those who are employed but cannot afford insurance, came out of a mid-1997 discussion among members of the Abingdon Episcopal Church outreach committee. As enthusiasm for the idea spread from church members to the community, including local medical professionals, it wasn’t long before the idea became reality. In second photo, Shepherd presents a check to Gloucester County Parks Superintendent Gregg Tonge in support of Woodville Park.
