Rt. 17 traffic light to be activated today

Construction work has been completed on the traffic signal project at the intersection of Routes 17 and 628 (T.C. Walker Road) in Gloucester near the new Page Middle School. The new signal is scheduled to be activated today.

To help motorists adjust to the presence of a new signal, the signal’s lights will flash starting at noon today, said Kelly Hannon, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation. The signal will stay in flash mode until Tuesday, when it will be fully activated between 9 a.m.-noon.

Message boards will be posted in the vicinity of the new signal to alert motorists of the change, Hannon said. A VDOT release said it took several months for the setting and testing of the signal base.

Cost of the signal project is $375,000, she said.

Meanwhile, Basic Construction Company of Newport News is in charge of road upgrades on Route 17 and on a small stretch of Route 628 leading to the new school. ...
