Ronald K. “Cap’n Ron” West, 70, of Hayes, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2026, surrounded by family.
Born on April 20, 1956, Ronnie lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and deep love for his family and the water that shaped his livelihood. He began working the water at just 13 years old as a “cull-boy,” a humble start that grew into a lifelong career. Ronnie spent decades crabbing, oystering, and fishing aboard his boat, the Monika E. Alongside his beloved wife, he built and operated a successful seafood business, VA Blue Crab Co., which they proudly ran until their retirement in 2021. In 2025, Ronnie and Viola were selected as the first-ever husband/wife Co-Grand Marshals of the Guinea Jubilee.
Outside of his work, Ronnie found joy in hunting, traveling, and, above all, spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of the water, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind in both his family and his community.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, Marian West and Ernest West Sr.; his sister, Rosa Goff, and his brother, Scott West.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Viola West; his daughter, Monika West of Wicomico, Virginia; his son, Keith West and his wife Valerie of Wicomico; his brother, Ernest West Jr. (Vicky); his mother-in-law, Luise Epp; his brothers-in-law, Lane H. Goff and Robert Epp; sister-in-law, Mary Epp, and special nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life is planned for 4 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the Abingdon Ruritan Club, 8784 Guinea Road, Hayes, Va. 23072. Burial will be private.
Ronnie’s presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
In memory of Ronnie, contributions may be made to either the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061, or Helping the Homeless Ministries, P.O. 1544, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
