Roger Roland Gamble of Port Haywood, a retired foreign service officer, veteran and family man, passed away at his home on Friday, July 10, 2026. He was 93. Roger was born in Deer River, Minnesota, in 1932. Following graduation from high school he joined the Air Force, serving in Japan during the Korean war as a radio intercept operator. In 1954, he met and married his beloved wife of 70 years, Jera Dean McGuire, and following five years of schooling, working and building a family, joined the Foreign Service. During the next 33 years, Roger and Jera lived in Costa Rica, the Philippines, Bolivia, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Antigua, and the U.S., where they made many lifelong friends from around the world. Roger’s distinguished career culminated in a posting as U.S. Ambassador to Suriname. The couple later retired to Mathews County, Virginia, where Roger enjoyed fishing, crabbing, managing his retirement “Retreat” and putting his energy and talents to work for various community organizations and charities. Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Jera. He is survived by their four children, Kelly (Peter) Hartshorn, Scott Gamble, Marc Gamble, and Steven (Rosa Maria) Gamble; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Jeanne), Fletcher (Danica), Allison (Sam), Olivia, Christina, Michael, and Catelyn, and six great-grandchildren, Kane, Braxton, Theo, Frances, Quincy and Parker. A memorial service with the inurnment to follow will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
