Roberta Hogge James, 77, of Gloucester, passed away on Sept. 30, 2025, surrounded by her family. Roberta was welcomed into heaven by her soulmate, Andy, on what would have been their 58th wedding anniversary.
Roberta was born on May 25, 1948, to the late Marvin R. Hogge and Ruth Thornton Hogge. She is survived by her son Jeff and his wife Jennifer, daughter Haley and her husband Chris, son Josh and his boyfriend, John, brother Keith and his wife Dena, and sister-in-law Brownie Bartley.
Roberta also leaves to cherish her memory five grandchildren who were the apple of their Mimi’s eye: Emili, Ashlen, Charlie, Ella and Brady. Roberta was a member of the Gloucester High School Class of 1966, where she was a cheerleader and voted “best looking” in her class.
Roberta was a member of the York River Circle of the King’s Daughters and a previous member of the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Ladies Auxiliary and the Gloucester Women’s Club. She was also a member of Singleton United Methodist Church, where she was the past president of the United Methodist Women and was active in various church activities throughout her life. Roberta cherished her years as a volunteer at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, where she made many friends and enjoyed helping patients.
Roberta’s life’s work was being a wife, mother and grandmother. She created a warm, welcoming home that was often the gathering place for her children’s friends. She kept the pantry filled with snacks and always made an extra spot at the table for anyone who decided to stay for dinner. Roberta was a fixture at her children’s and grandchildren’s activities and prided herself on being their biggest fan.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ronald Haggerty, Khaki Haggerty, and the staff at Direct Access Internal Medicine for their care and compassion. They would also like to thank the staff at Heron Cove 2—Vanessa, Kaidence, April and Amy—for loving Roberta like their own. Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025, at Singleton United Methodist Church, 5869 Ware Neck Road, Gloucester, officiated by the Reverend Calvin Griffin, followed by interment in the church cemetery. After the services, all are invited to stay for a reception in the church fellowship hall.
In memory of our loved one, memorial contributions may be made to Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va., 23061, or Singleton United Methodist Church, 5869 Ware Neck Road, Gloucester, Va., 23061.
