Robert Wesley Carter, age 90, of Gloucester, died surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Robert, a Navy veteran, served the school system of Gloucester as a grounds foreman for many years before retirement. Known to many as Popeye or “Pop,” he loved spending time with family, cooking, and playing cards on countless Friday nights. After his beloved wife of 33 years, Mary Kay Carter, went to be with the Lord in 2020, Pop moved into Commonwealth Senior Living at Gloucester House where he was loved on, cared for and admired by the countless associates and directors that encountered him. Pop enjoyed music, dancing, eating and going on outings. One of his favorite things was being able to tell anybody and everyone that his daughter was “Pop’s girl and Pop’s world.” Pop was preceded in death by his mother and father and sisters and brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Robin Longworth (James); son, Matthew Singleton, and countless other family members. On Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Spring Hill Baptist Church, the family will receive friends from 10-10:45 a.m. followed by the chapel service, conducted by Pastor Ross Davis, at 11 o’clock. The inurnment is private.
