ROBERT ‘WAYNE’ FLETCHER

Robert “Wayne” Fletcher, 73, of Gloucester, Va., passed away on March 1, 2024. He was born on December 20, 1950 in Richmond, Va., to the late Robert Fletcher and Elizabeth Ogburn Fletcher. Wayne was a loving family man and loyal friend. He was known for his kind heart, compassion, generosity, and sense of humor.

Wayne graduated from Gloucester High School in 1969. He was a proud graduate of Virginia Tech where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Poultry Science and a Master’s of Business Administration. His career spanned several decades in Salisbury, Md. He worked in poultry research for Perdue Farms and as a loan officer and appraiser for Farm Credit. He loved working with farmers. He later worked as a real estate appraiser for William Rayfield Realty until his retirement.

Wayne was an active and faithful member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Salisbury. He also cherished the memories and lessons from growing up at Salem United Methodist Church in Gloucester. His devotion to God’s teachings was evident in the way he lived his life, treating others with compassion and respect.

Wayne had a passion for sports and enjoyed watching games especially when his Hokies were playing or his grandson was playing baseball. He played slow-pitch softball for his church team for many years. Wayne enjoyed listening to music and attending concerts. He also enjoyed traveling and spending quality time with family and friends. Wayne never knew a stranger when it came to striking up a conversation. His work with the Gloucester County Democratic Committee reflected his belief in community service and civic responsibility.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Rita Jenkins Fletcher; his daughter, Paige Fletcher Bland (Jay); grandson, Nicholas Bland; brothers, Barry Fletcher and Howard Fletcher (Denise); sister, Robin Wilson (Ronny); sister-in-law, Amelita Thomas (John); nieces, Holly Handy (Tony) and Jessica Day (Mike); nephew, Cameron Fletcher (Jessyca), and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anita Fletcher.

The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Friday, March 8, 2024, from 6-7:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Salem Community Church, 11408 Salem Church Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061, followed by a reception.
