ROBERT LEIGHTON RAY

Mr. Robert Leighton Ray, fondly known as “Robby,” 86, of Hayes, quietly went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Leaving behind a legacy of kindness, service, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends, especially relatives in Bermuda.

Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, Robby completed high school in Greenwich then attended Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland, where he majored in physics. He was awarded a certificate for the successful completion of the advanced computer programming concepts course from the University of Connecticut. His employment consists of Data Entry for Greenwich Bank, IT specialist at Morgan Drug Store in Gloucester, and Film Lab Technician at Sam’s Club in Newport News, Virginia. Robby enjoyed several hobbies. Woodworking, jazz, dancing, sports, traveling and mainly cruising with the family. Robert was joined in holy matrimony to Yvonne Dixon Spriggs on November 3, 1988.

His survivors include his wife, Yvonne; his sisters-in-law, Melinda Dixon Potts, Patricia Dixon Boyd, Delores Dixon and nieces, Eleecia B. Hood (Stanley) and Kierston Rudolics (Jason), and nephew, Vasco D. Boyd III. He was predeceased by his mother, Bertha Blake Ray; father, Robert Ray; niece, Chonda Henderson Tucker; brother-in-law, Thomas Dixon Jr., and his mother and father-in-law, Thomas Henry Dixon Sr. and Luretha Foster Dixon.

Robby made a lasting impression on many people. He will be dearly missed by so many and will forever have his bragging rights for eating the most ice cream cones on Oasis of the Sea, of Royal Caribbean. We cannot bring back the days when we would gather around the table for a big family dinner or cookout or just sit and talk on the screened porch or any of the other frequent family gatherings. The days we spent with Robby will live with us forever.

On Monday, August 24, 2026, the family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The graveside service, conducted by Pastor E.R. Graham, will follow at noon at The First United Baptist Church Cemetery. In memory of Robby, contributions may be made to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad at P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018.
