Richard D. “Rick” Zima, age 57, of Gloucester, passed away suddenly on Sunday morning, August 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, service, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends and community.

Born in Englewood, New Jersey, Rick followed in the footsteps of his late parents, Pat and Dick Zima, and lived a life defined by generosity and purpose. He gave freely of his time and talents to his community, finding great fulfillment in serving others. He was deeply involved with Ware Church, Bread for Life, an active alumnus of Florida Tech’s Chi Phi chapter, the local homeless shelter, and numerous other volunteer organizations throughout Gloucester. Whether helping a neighbor, supporting his church, or lending a hand wherever it was needed, Rick made a lasting difference in the lives of countless people.

Above all else, Rick cherished his family. He especially loved his wife, Sue, his children, Harrison and Hayden and the life they built together on the water. Some of his happiest moments were spent boating, surrounded by those he loved most. His steady presence, generous heart, and deep love created a safe harbor for family and friends alike.

Rick was known not only for his compassion but also for his quick wit and playful sense of humor. He never let the opportunity for a joke, a good-natured jab, or a perfectly timed one-liner pass him by. His laughter was contagious, his teasing was affectionate, and he had a remarkable gift for making people smile—even in difficult moments. Those who knew him will forever hear his voice in the stories they tell and the laughter they continue to share.

He leaves behind a family who will miss him deeply and who will forever carry forward the values he lived every day—love, faith, generosity, laughter, and service. His memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Rick’s life will be held at Ware Episcopal Church on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Dr. Christopher Beeley. The interment will follow in the church cemetery. In memory of Rick, contributions may be made to Ware Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 616, Gloucester, Va. 23061 and Bread for Life, P.O.
