REV. FREDERICK G. REED

The Rev. Frederick G. Reed, 86, of Gloucester, passed away Nov. 3, 2015 at home.

He was born on Sept. 11, 1929 in Old Forge, N.Y., son of Frank and Mary (Winifred) Reed. He graduated from high school in 1947 and served in the Air Force from 1948-1952. The Rev. Reed graduated from Centre College of Kentucky in 1958 and Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in 1961 and was ordained a Presbyterian Minister.

He served in a number of churches during his long career. In Perryville, Ky., he was pastor at Perryville Presbyterian while also serving at McDonald and Mt Pleasant churches. He was pastor at Bethel First Presbyterian in Campbellsville, Ky., for about 15 years. He then served at Speed Memorial Church in Speed, Ind., for 13 years. After he retired, he moved to Gloucester and served at Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church for about 20 years. At the time of his death he was Pastor Emeritus at Groves. 

The Rev. Reed was very active in the community. He served in multiple capacities in the Lions Club for well over 50 years and was active in the local ministerial associations throughout his career. He was also active in Church World Service and in 1992 went to Hawaii as part of the Disaster Relief team responding to hurricane Iniki. He directed summer youth activities in Perryville and was a leader in the Perryville Battlefield Development Association for which he received a Kentucky Colonel commission. In Campbellsville he served on the Lake Cumberland Area Development District. While in Gloucester he was active on the Gloucester Emergency Committee, Gloucester Ministerial Association, Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester, the Lions Club of Gloucester and volunteered as a chaplain at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. In addition to community service, his other passions were bowling and golf.

He was a spiritual shepherd and a Christian gentleman with a humble soul. He was a loving and faithful pastor to Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. The Rev. Reed dearly loved his family and was so proud of them. Through his example, he was an inspiration to all and will be lovingly remembered.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Sally Jane Demuth. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Reed; children, Anne Zara, Richard Reed, Patricia Howard and Rebecca Reed; 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services conducted by the Rev. Thomas Bunting were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church. Interment with military honors, conducted by the Rev. Sven vanBaars, was at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Abingdon Episcopal Church Cemetery.
