REV. ALEX ASBURY

On August 14, 2016, the Rev. Alex Asbury of Gloucester, sweetly slipped into the arms of his Lord.

He was born in Squire, West Virginia, and is survived by three of 10 brothers and sisters, Alfred Asbury of Rossville, Georgia, Hugh and Linda Asbury of Gloucester, and Dolora Smith of Gloucester.

He was preceded in death by Ray Asbury, Bertha Willis, Sara Dawson, Dorgie Hart, Randal Asbury, Junior Asbury, and Frieda Asbury.

At age seven, he met and fell in love with his future bride, the Rev. Doris Asbury. Theirs was a great love affair and example to many through 58 years of marriage until her passing in May 2015. Upon retiring from the Assemblies of God District Offices of Louisiana (15 years) and Potomac (seven years) as a licensed minister/bookkeeper, they settled in Gloucester.

His passions were simple. He loved God with an unwavering faith, and loved his family wholly and unconditionally. He was kind and selfless as a husband and both wise and tender as a father. He was a mentor, a counselor, and a spiritual giant to all who knew him.

He is survived and adored by his three children, Barbara and the Rev. Bill West, the Rev. Sandra and Tom McElfresh, and David and Shawna Asbury; his grandchildren, the Rev. Aaron and Heather West, Adam and Laura West, Rebecca Stroud, Ryan Asbury, and Shawn Asbury, and his three great-grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, and Micah.

Memorial services were conducted on August 17, 2016 at 11 a.m. in Severn Church, Naxera, Va.

Special thanks goes out to Severn Church, who graciously ministered to, encouraged and loved Alex and Doris through the years, and have tenderly cared for their family in this time of grief. Thank you for the outpouring of love through meals, visits, and prayer.
