Retiring ‘Old Glory’

Morey Alexander of American Legion Post 83, Mathews, carefully places a worn-out American flag into the fire during a Flag Day disposal ceremony held at the post headquarters in Hudgins last Thursday. The Legionnaires have been collecting faded, torn and tattered flags throughout the year for the ceremony, with 235 flags disposed of this year. During last year’s ceremony, the post disposed of about 470 flags. Others taking part included, from left, Ladies Auxiliary president Bonnie Smith, Ladies Auxiliary member Cindy Ford and Legionnaires Ervin Morris, Ellis Hudgins and Roy Walker.
