Repairs to Gwynn’s Island bridge to begin next week

Repairs to the Gwynn’s Island bridge are scheduled to begin next week, perhaps as early as Monday.

A press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation said the repairs are expected to take six to eight days to complete and will be performed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily, possibly including Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10 and 11.

When repairs are completed, the bridge will be able to handle tractor-trailers weighing up to 25 tons.

Throughout the project, vehicle traffic will be allowed to cross the bridge, which connects the island with the mainland via Route 223 over Milford Haven, said the release. A single travel lane will be closed during work zone hours. VDOT personnel will use flags to direct motorists as they alternate lanes, and there could be minor travel delays.
