Repairs conducted recently on Coleman Bridge

Several switches on the grid deck of the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge were recently replaced.

Jennifer Gwaltney, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said that the project included replacing a switch under each lane of the grid deck.

Then, several late-night bridge closures were scheduled, Gwaltney said, to test the span. “It’s working great,” she said of the span after the routine maintenance was completed.

In other bridge news, Gwaltney said that a late-afternoon opening of the Coleman was required last Wednesday. A commercial vessel had been scheduled to pass through that area earlier in the day, was delayed, and the rush-hour opening resulted in some unexpected traffic delays for commuters.

“We are required by the Coast Guard to comply” for bridge openings, Gwaltney said. Normally, military vessels do not pass through the corridor during morning and evening rush hours. ...
