Rep. Wittman addresses Gloucester Chamber

Despite increasing pressures from other countries, especially China, America is still a world economic leader, Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Montross) said on March 9.

During a Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce reception at the Hampton Inn, Wittman said that an important part of this region’s economic base is the military. He said that it would be unwise to cut funding for equipment and training, as proposed by sequestration, as this would be of detriment to “those in harm’s way.”

Such cuts could place America in a dangerous situation, Wittman said, and would be illogical. It’s important for legislators to “strike the proper balance” for military spending, he said.

Regarding the civilian employment situation, Wittman said, there are still way too many people who are unemployed, underemployed, or have stopped looking for work. America’s economy will right itself, he said, and has a lot more potential looking forward.
