Remembering Captain Sally

The Captain Sally Tompkins Chapter UDC 2626 met recently to lay a wreath on the grave of Captain Sally Tompkins in her honor and memory. A Mathews native, Tompkins opened and operated Robertson Hospital in Richmond during the Civil War. She was commissioned as a captain in the Confederate Army. She died on July 25, 1916 and was buried with military honors at Christ Episcopal Church cemetery, on Williams Wharf Road, Mathews.
