Registration opens Friday for Dragon Run paddle trips

Registration for fall Dragon Run paddle trips opens at 9 a.m. Friday on DragonRun.org. The paddle trips are conducted by Friends of Dragon Run in the spring, summer and fall, weather permitting.

This year’s fall paddle season on Dragon Run will begin Oct. 19 and end Nov. 5. Trips will be conducted every day. Each trip will accommodate nine guests who must be at least 18 years of age.

The paddle trips will be round trips and the upstream paddling may be strenuous at times, a release said.

Paddlers are provided with a kayak, personal flotation device, and paddle. Volunteers assist guests through beaver dams and along the course of the journey. A nature guide accompanies the kayakers to point out flora and fauna and to answer questions.

“The trees in the Dragon this time of year are exceptional—beautiful colors plus the bald cypress are turning a cinnamon color,” said FODR president Jeff Wright. “Shrubs with bright berries are everywhere, waiting for resident and migrating birds to fill up on them on their journey south. Plus, the temperatures are ideal for paddling in the fall.”

Dragon Run stretches 40 miles from the hamlet of Powcan in King and Queen County to the Piankatank River.

Friends of Dragon Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to preserving, protecting, and ensuring the wise use of the Dragon Run watershed. Paddle trips are a primary fund raiser for FODR, and the organization requests a $50 donation at the time of registration.

A release said reservations fill quickly. Visit DragonRun.org for more information and to sign up.
