Members of the Mathews High School girls’ tennis team pose with their Region 1A runner-up trophy following last Thursday’s match at Rappahannock. While falling 5-0 in the regional finals, the Blue Devils gave a good account of themselves competitively. “Game scores went back and forth with each match,” said MHS head coach Jon Hatch. “I give Rappahannock credit, but I saw growth in confidence of our play today and there’s no better time than now.” Although MHS lost, the players will advance as a team in the VHSL state semifinals on either Friday, June 6, or Saturday, June 7, at the Region B champions’ school. This week, Mathews will host the Region A singles and doubles tournaments on Wednesday and Friday, starting at 10 a.m. each day. Team members include, front row from left, Ayla Martinez, Marissa Hudgins, Delaney Boatman, Lyla Duff; back row, Emily Moughon, Rayann Helbig, Ella Ward, Jayda Thomas, Charlotte Bailey, Bethany Davis, Liberti Carter and, not pictured, Cate Christopher and Jordan Sadeg.
