Reflections from a school counselor

Back to school is an exciting time of year! As a recently retired school counselor, I have many great memories of my experiences with both the children and their families.

In middle school, there is so much anticipation by sixth graders of what the school year will bring. Helping them adjust and embrace the middle school environment was a wonderful way to help them grow! Fears give way to new friendships and more independence. Occasional conflicts give way to learning how to resolve problems. Witnessing this growth experience throughout seventh and eighth grades has been a most rewarding experience for me too.

Perhaps my most memorable occasions came with my weekly Lunch Bunch groups. The insight I gained into students’ lives was truly a heartfelt experience! I kept a plaque in my office that was a Native American prayer … “Grant that I may not criticize my neighbor until I have walked a mile in his moccasins.” That quote is so true. Ev...
