Reed sets course record in Gwynn’s Island 5K

Russell Reed set a 5K course record in 17:43.8, James Cole repeated in the 8K, and Elton Hudgins paced the Fun Run field in the Gwynn’s Island Festival races held on Saturday.

The three events are sponsored by Virginia Tidewater Trailrunners and had a total of 78 participants, said Christine Johnson, who announced the results.

In the Fun Run, just a bit more than one mile, 9-year-old Elton Hudgins finished in 10:12.8, followed by Lynsey Cox, 13, the first female runner, in 11:32.9, and Dean Christensen, 7, in 12:42.8. Thirteen runners and walkers of all ages took part.

Reed took the crown in the 5K in 17:43.8. In all, 52 racers took part in the race.

Among women, Christina Grover led the pack in 25:33.7. Age group winners were Faith Lewis (19 and under, 27:03.6) Nancy Barnhardt (20-29, 26:05.3), Kim Armitage (30-39, 27:07.6), Amanda Hall (40-49, 31:11.6), Amy Mulholland (50-59, 27:22.5), Di Hayes (60-69, 38:17.9) and Nancy Burleson (70-79, 33:47.1).
