Recovering from Ian

Coast Guard helicopter pilot Lt. Garrett Hendrickson, a 2011 graduate of Gloucester High School, is one of many Coast Guard personnel helping the people of Florida recover from the devastation of Hurricane Ian. Sanibel Island was one of the most damaged communities in the path of the storm. Above, a Coast Guard H-60 helicopter hovers over the island, conducting rescue operations in the storm’s aftermath. Below, Coast Guard H-60s pre-positioned to West Palm Beach to allow immediate response during and after Hurricane Ian. Henderickson, a Gloucester native, is no stranger to disaster recovery efforts. Stationed at USCG Air Station Clearwater in Clearwater, Florida, he took part in relief efforts after an earthquake struck Haiti in August 2021, conducting numerous medical evacuation missions. The story of his work on the island nation was featured in the Gazette-Journal’s Sept. 9, 2021 Tribute to Heroes section.
