Recipes from a good cook

“The children eat these just like they eat cookies.”

5 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
3 Tbs. sugar
¾ c. vegetable shortening
2 c. buttermilk
2 Tbs. instant yeast

Mix and sift the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda and sugar. Blend shortening and yeast into dry ingredients. Make a well in the dough and pour buttermilk into well. Mix all ingredients well and let rise about an hour. Dough will be sticky. Make off into biscuits and let rise a few minutes. Bake at 400°F. until brown. The dough “keeps two weeks in refrigerator.”

“I use a bread machine. Set machine for dough.”

3 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
2 Tbs. yeast
3 Tbs. butter, melted
1½ c. milk, room temperature
1 egg, beaten
2 Tbs. sugar

If you use a bread machine, put liquid in first and then add the other ingredients. Let rise and then make up and let rise again about 1 hour. Bake at 400°F. until done.
