‘Ready to roll’—Schools gear up for Tuesday

Gloucester County Public Schools expects to welcome approximately 5,320 students when the 2016-2017 school session begins on Tuesday. Mathews County’s preliminary enrollment figure currently stands at 1,076 students.

And officials in both school districts report that all is in readiness for next week’s opening day.

In Gloucester

About 65 new employees, including 50 some new instructional staff members, join Gloucester for the upcoming school year. The majority of the new hires are for existing position, replacing employees who retired or left the division. They participated in a three-day orientation program in August that included a school bus tour of the county.

Three schools—Abingdon Elementary and Page and Peasley Middle Schools—have new principals this year. The middle school administrators are new to the division while the Abingdon principal was previously an assistant principal in the division.
